Small Grains Breeding Team Showcases Innovations at the 2026 California Grains Conference

Xiaofei Zhang and Joshua Hegarty presented advances in small grains breeding at the 2026 California Grains Conference, held October 13 at UC Davis. 

Xiaofei highlighted new wheat, oat, and barley varieties, along with breeding efforts to improve crop resilience, grain quality, and nutritional value. Josh reviewed the history and progress of triticale improvement, emphasizing its potential as both a food and forage crop. The presentations showcased breeding achievements and encouraged collaboration with growers, millers, bakers, and industry partners to identify priorities and shape future breeding objectives for California agriculture.
