Collaboration Advancing Wheat Innovation at UC Davis

The UC Davis Wheat Breeding Program continues its strong tradition of innovation in wheat genetics and breeding. Our team is developing wheat varieties for California producers using an integrated “package” approach that combines disease resistance, yield performance, grain quality, and nutritional traits.

Current efforts include breeding lines with high resistant starch, reduced gluten allergenicity, high yellow pigment, and awnless dual-purpose wheat for forage and grain production. Quality evaluation through the California Wheat Commission Baking Lab helps ensure new lines meet industry needs.

Collaboration among Jorge Dubcovsky, Joshua Hegarty, Cluaida Carter, Teng Vang, and colleagues continues to drive progress toward higher-value opportunities for California wheat growers.
