[Paper] First Large‐Scale Breakdown of Yr15 Resistance to Wheat Yellow Rust

First Large‐Scale Breakdown of Yr15 Resistance to Wheat Yellow Rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) Recorded Globally.

The article focuses on the significant breakdown of the Yr15 resistance gene in wheat against yellow rust, caused by the pathogen Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), observed during the 2025 growing season in England. Following reports of high infection levels in previously resistant wheat varieties, genotyping revealed that all tested varieties contained the Yr15 gene, which had provided effective resistance for over three decades. The emergence of Yr15-virulent Pst isolates, linked to strong selection pressure from widespread cultivation of Yr15-carrying varieties, has led to a severe epidemic across northern and eastern England. This situation marks the first large-scale breakdown of Yr15 resistance, raising concerns within the agricultural community.

Rapid response launched to tackle new yellow rust strains threatening UK wheat. We also need to take action in the United States to protect our growers.
